The BCCI on Tuesday has opposed a probe by the Justice Mukul Mudgal panel into the IPL match-fixing and betting scandal. The Supreme Court has now reserved the order on constituting a probe panel to investigate allegations against N. Srinivasan and 12 cricketers in scam that rocked Indian cricket last year. BCCI’s lawyers urged the two-judge Supreme Court bench to order a fresh probe into the allegations against Srinivasan and other cricketers linked with the scam.
BCCI’s lawyers also requested the court to reinstate Srinivasan as Board chief till investigations are over.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday was expected to formally hand over the investigation to former judge Justice Mukul Mudgal. The Mudgal panel, which submitted its request for assistance in the probe, said it would take at least four months to complete another round of investigation. Justice Mudgal has asked for the inclusion of retired special director of CBI M.L. Sharma on his panel. The court’s directive on the new panel is awaited.
Last week, the Supreme Court had scrapped a Board of Control for Cricket in India panel that included former Test cricketer Ravi Shastri and CBI director R.K. Raghavan. There were questions of conflict of interest in the proposed BCCI panel.
Justice Mudgal, whose three-member committee investigated the IPL scam for four months after being appointed by Supreme Court in October last year, submitted a report on February 10. He had submitted a sealed envelope containing “incriminating material” against 13 people connected with the IPL scam.
One of the 13 names was that of suspended BCCI president, Srinivasan, whose son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan has been indicted for betting and leaking team information. According to the Mudgal panel, Meiyappan was a Chennai Super Kings team official.
