Bengal CM bans Shastra Pujan

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given instructions to stop the ‘Shastra Pujan’ done by the RSS and VHP on ‘Bijoya’ or Vijaya Dashmi. Shastra Pujan is an integral part of the Dussehra celebrations and it has scriptural support for this type of celebration. Hence, the Chief Minster should not link Shastra Pujan to any particular organisation. Just as it is customary to celebrate Ganpati Puja for 11 days in Maharashtra, it is customary in Bengal to celebrate Durga Puja which culminates with the celebration on Bijoya or Dussera.

So the question arises that when this Shastra Pujan has been performed for all these years why this year it is being denied permission? Bengal State celebrates Durga Puja with the greatest fervour and joy when compared to the Navratri celebrations anywhere in India. And the Chief Minister of this very State giving such instruction is not going to be palatable to the Durga devotees. Traditional cultural practices are being hindered because of political differences. Last year the permission for Puja was denied in numerous parts of Bengal by the Chief Minister. Considering the actions and records of the minister it seems that she is acting against the faith and devotion of the people. If this continues then Durga Puja will be banished from Bengal. We are not so foolish as not to understand why this ban on faith of the people is being done. Instead of showing how Bengal can celebrate its cultural diverse celebrations happily together she is misusing her position to block. The Chief Minister should show magnanimity and tolerance by considering the cultural heritage of the land of having unity in diversity where the two various cultures celebrate their festivals at the same time amicably and harmoniously.
