There are agreements and disagreements over Sania Mirza’s appointment as a brand ambassador of Telangana. Born on 15 November 1986 in Mumbai, Sania is a professional Indian tennis player. Her forefathers have lived in Hyderabad for more than a century. Her grandfather, Mr. Mohammed Zaffer Mirza started his career as an Engineer in Nizam’s Railways in Hyderabad in 1948 he died in his ancestral home in Hyderabad. For a decade starting from 2003 to 2013, she was ranked by the Women’s Tennis Association as India’s highest ranked player, both in singles and doubles, after which her retirement from the singles competition put Ankita Raina at the top spot. Mirza was named one of the ’50 heroes of Asia’ by Time in October 2005. In March 2010, The Economic Times named Mirza in the list of the “33 women who made India proud”. In 2009, Sania Mirza became engaged to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza. However the engagement was called off shortly after. She started seeing Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. On 12 April 2010, she married Shoaib Malik in a traditional Muslim Islamic Wedding ceremony, India followed by Pakistani wedding customs for a mahr of INR 6.1 million (US$137,500). Their Walima ceremonies were held in Lahore, Pakistan.

Her appointment as a brand ambassador is not appreciated by many citizens of state, as Rs. 1 crore is not a small amount. To sanction such a huge amount from the taxpayers’ funds to an individual without any conditions will definitely affect the newly formed state. Utilisation and that too without any authorisation from the Legislature would constitute a serious financial irregularity in the state. As Sania Mirza has contributed to the nation and state in sports, there is another badminton player who also made state and country proud.

Saina Nehwal, a badminton player, is the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton at the Olympics. She achieved this feat by winning the Bronze medal at the London Olympics on 4 August, 2012. She is the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships and was also the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament, by clinching the Indonesia Open on 21st June, 2009. Saina is supported by the Olympic Gold Quest.
The senior most personality of Andhra Pradesh, Karnam Malleswari a weightlifter, during her career of ten years, she has won 11 gold and three silver medals besides the prestigious Olympic bronze. She has been the National Champion for nine years (twice in the 52 kg category and seven times in the 54 kg category). There are many sports personalities who have contributed to the glory of the state. However, they were never acknowledged by the government. Sania Mirza already has lot to her kitty.

Rao presented a cheque of Rs. 1 crore to Ms. Sania Mirza after announcing her as the State’s “Brand Ambassador.” No one can guarantee that she will not settle in Pakistan tomorrow. Presently, she has a duel loyalty because of her marriage with the Pakistani cricketer. Further, the CM of Telangana had categorically declared that all the important postings would be from people who belong to the state. Sania does not belong to Telangana. There are many poor sportsmen and women in the state who need money for training and development, however, the CM gave away Rs. 1 crore to her but she is already rich. The act of the CM as under allegation is to appease minority community because there is local body election in the state within a few months.

Telangana government should exercise lots of prudence in what they spend and what they benefit out of such expenditure for the common man. They are not doing anything to boost the infrastructure in the state. They have not even planned how to overcome with the water shortages and power shortages in the state. After two months of taking oath as a CM, no concrete plan has come from the K Chandrashekhar Rao and it is really very poor show by him. There are corruptions and inefficiencies in the recently divided state where change is almost impossible in near future. KCR should talk after bringing change. Everyone wonders why KCR has not picked up Karnam Malleshwari, Pullela Gopichand or Saina Nehwal like sports personalities as brand ambassador of the state.

If the decision is taken due to vote bank considerations and for minority appeasement then it is condemnable. The decision seems to be not purely due to her sports talent but for minority votes. KCR denies giving fees reimbursement for students of Andhra Pradesh region and blatantly kept the condition that children those who are in Telangana before 1956 only are eligible for fees reimbursement. If a family who is living for years in Telangana are not given statehood, then how a person has credentials as a sports icon, without any Telangana background? Can she become the brand ambassador and simply take away Rs. 1 crore? Many students who believe themselves as Telangana students are shown the door with empty hands.
