Fresh clashes Saharanpur AV

One more person was killed in yet another attack by caste on Wednesday morning in riot-hit Shabbirpur in Saharapur district of Uttar Pradesh taking the toll to two in the last 24 hours.

Police said unidentified people ambushed a group of Dalits returning from a rally by Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Tuesday evening, killing one man and injuring eight.

This was the second wave of caste violence in Shabbirpur and adjacent areas after May 5 clashes between Dalits and Thakurs where scores of houses of scheduled caste families were torched and one man killed.

24 people were arrested so far in connection with the fresh clashes that erupted. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rs. 15 lakh for the family of Ashish, who was killed and Rs. 50,000 each for the injured.

Five additional companies of police force were deployed. So far, two senior police officers in Saharanpur have been suspended.

Days after the May 5 killing, angry supporters of Dalit group Bhim Army torched a police post and several vehicles in Saharanpur with chaos prevailing for hours.

BSP’s Saharanpur zonal in-charge Kuldeep Baliyan said a meeting of party leaders was called and a delegation would meet government officials to demand immediate arresting of all suspects and provide adequate security to Dalits.

“Situation is under control, we are monitoring everything and will be camping here till normalcy returns,” said Home Secretary Mani Prasad Sharma.

Sharma is part of a four-member team sent by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Shabbirpur where more than a dozen people were injured in sword attacks on Tuesday after Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati’s visit to the violence-torn village.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said that while the Samajwadi Party and the BSP encourage caste-based politics, the BJP is promoting development-based politics.

“We will stop the (Saharanpur) violence, and arrest those who are orchestrating such incidents; no will be spared, including politicians,” said the deputy chief minister.

Sources in the Yogi Adityanath government said that anyone indulging in violence would face the law, be it a Dalit or a Rajput.
