Maharashtra Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said the state government was considering a proposal to increase the amount of compensation to kin of victims in accidents involving state transport buses from Rs. three lakh to Rs. 10 lakh.

Replying to a discussion on the issue in the Assembly raised through a calling attention notice, Raote said that currently, the compensation given to the kin of those, who lose their lives in accidents involving Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is Rs. three lakh.

“We plan to increase the amount to Rs. ten lakh,” he said.

The issue was raised by Kunal Patil (Congress) and others, who said that 22 persons were killed and 35 were injured in the accident last month on Dhule-Chalisgaon Road in a head-on collision between a Chalisgaon-Surat state transport bus and a container.

He said the Chalisgaon-Dhule highway had no dividers and speed breakers. Local residents have been protesting for the same but with little success.

Raote said Dhule-Chalisgaon was part of the NH-211 and the Centre had undertaken the task of quadrupling and upgradation of the highway.
