The nine-member special committee of Hockey India (HI) that met today recommended the removal of Paul van Ass as chief coach of the national men’s hockey team.

The special committee headed by Olympian Harbinder Singh reached this decision in a meeting that lasted for over three hours.

“We have recommended our decision to Hockey India regarding Paul, which is confidential. The committee has worked under assumption that Paul won’t return. He isn’t even responding to our calls and mails. Hockey India will take final decision,” Singh told the media after the meeting.

With Van Ass going, he will be the fourth coach in five years to get sacked by HI.

Roelant Oltmans, who is already in-charge of the hockey camp in Shimla, is expected to lead the team into the Rio Olympics 2016 to be held in Brazil.

The Dutchman was involved in a heated exchange with Narinder Batra during the tournament in Antwerp earlier this month.

Having failed to submit a report requested by Batra and attend the hockey camp in Shimla, Van Ass claimed he was fired by HI.

HI refuted his allegations and since then both parties have made several charges against one another.
