The family of the teenage girl who was gangraped and allegedly murdered in Kolkata, on Tuesday met President Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi seeking a CBI probe into the case. The family has said that the President has assured help. “We have been given assurances, we are going back with assurance,” said a family member.
Earlier in the day, the family also met National Commission for Women chief Mamata Sharma. The family had on Monday filed a writ petition in the court and sought financial compensation from the West Bengal government. In the petition, the family said that it has no faith in the state police investigating the case in the wake of the alleged negligence earlier.
The victim’s father had also written to West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan, complaining against police and hospital authorities for not providing adequate facilities.
The 16-year-old girl succumbed to her burn injuries on December 31, 2013 in Kolkata. The police had on January 2 said that the girl who was gangraped in October didn’t commit suicide but was set ablaze by the accused. The police have appealed in the court to initiate charges against two of the accused in the case.
