Media houses should adhere to journalistic norms

Media is regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy and it is always said that media is a mirror to our society and always portrays the reality without manipulating the news. Well, is there any iota of truth in whatever layman thinks about media? Well, I believe no. There are many media houses in our nation which uses Journalism as a tool to achieve their political ambition.

There was a time when media actually had a lot of credibility in society; people used to believe anything blindly published by media houses but now, the scenario has changed. Nowadays people investigate the veracity of news by comparing it with other media publications because even they now know that media has become a money making machine and it publishes news which will benefit their company even if it misleads the audiences.

Obviously, there is no doubt that there are few media houses which are operated by big bulls of the nation, due to which many times media houses tamper with news and also kill explosive news which needs to come out in front of the nation but as I said, it is operated by big bulls so they bury this kind of news and in return, they receive huge amount of money. Few media houses’ names are maligned in society but that doesn’t mean we should be prejudiced towards all media houses in the nation. Still there are many media houses which work according to the principles of parallel media.

Many journalists working in media houses are working according to the direction of the owner. Recently a news hit headlines where the news anchor of the national news channel India TV attempted to commit suicide and alleged that her top level colleagues use to harass her and asked her to act against journalism ethics by meeting a top politician, so that the channel can benefit out of it. After suffering from this harassment, she finally made an attempt to commit suicide. This only goes to show that many journalists want to work on the theory of parallel media but their boss doesn’t allow them to work fairly.

Journalists working with Network 18 including CNN IBN, IBN7, Firstpost etc are regarded as reputed journalists and honest ones. After Reliance took over Network 18 Group, many eminent journalists from the group left the company. Media stalwarts like Rajdeep Sardesai, Sagarika Ghose and others left the company after Reliance took over the reins of the company; this only goes to show it that they don’t want to work with a company which will only focus on commercialisation of the news instead of working hard on news content.

All I want to say is that there exist many media houses in the country which only focuses on the profit aspect of the company instead of major happenings in the nation. These media houses are ignoring their responsibility to create awareness in society and are just busy in making money.
