MS Dhoni now Indian captain with worst away Test loss record

India skipper MS Dhoni, the only captain to have won all three ICC limited-overs trophy to go with the Test mace, now holds the unfortunate record of an Indian captain with most Test defeats overseas.

The 40-run loss to New Zealand in the Auckland Test on Sunday was Dhoni’s 11th away loss, overtaking 10 suffered by teams led by MAK Pataudi, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly.

Bishan Singh Bedi-led teams lost eight Tests while Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar had to taste defeat six times each on foreign soil.

Also noteworthy is that India have now lost 10 of their last 13 away Test. The last time they won was against West Indies in June 2011.

Indian captains with most away Test defeats:

MS Dhoni: 11

MAK Pataudi, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly: 10 each
Bishan S Bedi: 8
Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar: 6 each
