Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the spiralling price of essential items and said a new slogan doing the round now is “Arhar Modi”.

Rahul slammed Modi over making hollow prices to control price rise and questioned why he did not raise the issue during the celebrations of two years of his government.

“Two months back, NDA celebrated its ‘happy birthday party’, even Bollywood stars came from Mumbai to take part in the celebrations. The programme was called ‘ek nayi subha’. Prime Minister spoke about ‘Swachh Bharat’, Make in India. He said thousands of youth have gotten jobs through the Make in India initiative. But I never heard him talk about price rise even once,” Rahul said.

Continuing his dig at Modi, Rahul said, “He never spoke of potatoes even once, he never spoke of tomatoes even once.  You can make false claims on startup India, make in India but not on rising prices. Why are you not talking of price rise?.”

Mr. Gandhi chided Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to safeguard the interests of the poor. “You said you wanted to be the people’s chowkidaar,” he said. “It has been left to the Congress to serve as chowkidaar,” he alleged, citing the PM’s attempts to “snatch” farmers’ land with a controversial proposal on acquiring farming land for industry that was shelved by the government after wide political opposition.
