Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena on Tuesday announced its support for Ram Nath Kovind, the NDA picked candidate in the Presidential Elections 2017.

Speaking to media, Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray said that his party has decided to support Kovind’s candidature and all the lawmakers will vote for him in the upcoming elections. “As I had said earlier, our party leaders met today, and decided to extend support to Ram Nath Kovind,” Thackeray said.

“Amit Shah had called me yesterday and told that BJP has decided to field Ram Nath Kovind for the election, and all the alliance partners of NDA are with them. We met today and decided that all our lawmakers will vote in Kovind’s favour,” Uddhav said.

“Amit Shah had come down here and requested that we should all stay united. We had suggested two names of Mohan Bhagwat and MS Swaminathan. We had a meeting of Shiv Sena leaders after which we have decided to support NDA candidate,” Thackeray said.

He said they believe that there should be no politics on caste lines. “We wish Ramnath ji all the best and expect that the nation prospers in his tenure,” the Shiv Sena leader said.

Earlier, Sena had on Monday said that it will announce its decision on Tuesday.

“We do not want oppose just for the sake of it. Ram Nath Kovind is a good person. They have suggested a good name. Hope he does a good job,” Uddhav Thackeray said.

The NDA, led by the BJP, has 5,37,683 votes and this is including the Shiv Sena. The numbers seem to be in favour of Ram Nath Kovind, the NDA nominee for the post of the President of India.

The Sena’s announcement comes as an additional support for the ruling BJP which has already received adequate backing from constituents of the NDA as well as non-NDA parties such as Biju Janata Dal and Telangana Rashtra Samiti to Kovind’s candidature.
