Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Monday, refused to comment on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joining active politics.

Sonia Gandhi silence comes amid media reports suggesting that Priyanka Gandhi may join the Congress General Secretary. However, Priyanka’s office had later denied any such move.

The Congress president also chose not to divulge any details about the location of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

“When he (Rahul Gandhi) returns you will know,” she said when asked by reporters about his location.

Rahul Gandhi has gone on a sabbatical for a few weeks but his destination was not disclosed by the Congress, fuelling speculation about his whereabouts.

Party sources said that he has taken a “leave of absence” to reportedly reflect on a series of electoral defeats and deliberate on the future course of the 125-year-old party.

“Rahul Gandhi has been granted leave of absence for ‘aap chintan, aap manthan’ (introspection),” a party leader said.

Meanwhile, a local lawyer has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court seeking to know the whereabouts of Rahul.

Petitioner Ashok Pande said he deemed it necessary for the safety of Gandhi, Congress Vice-President and an MP, and because the reputation of Government of India was involved.

Pande contended that since Gandhi enjoyed security cover of the elite Special Protection Group (SPG), he could not disappear without proper information.

“I have prayed that the court should direct Government of India (through Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs) and Director General (of) SPG to search for Rahul Gandhi and if he is not under the security of SPG, it should take him under its cover,” he said.
