Speculations are rife in political circles that Supriya Sule might take over the reins of Nationalist Political Party (NCP) from her father Sharad Pawar. According to sources, Sharad Pawar who is ageing is keen to pass on the baton of the party to Supriya. Supriya who has been spearheading the campaigning activities of NCP has been playing an active role for the development of the party at the grassroot level. She is already heading the women’s wing of the party and is actively working towards the empowerment of women. Since senior NCP leaders are facing corruption charges hence Supriya is likely to be offered larger role in the party.
Thus NCP is following the footsteps of parties like Congress and Shiv Sena that are following dynasty politics. Of late the party has suffered massive setback in the Lok Sabha, assembly, BMC and other municipality elections. With an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls Sharad Pawar is keen to revive NCP and is likely to form an alliance with BJP. Pawar who aspired to become Prime Minister was unable to fulfil his dream due to his strained relations with Congress. Moreover, NCP is involved in a tiff with Congress and will look for other alternatives ahead of the general election.
On the other hand, all is not well with BJP and Sena alliance in the state as both parties are involved in a game of one upmanship. Sena claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had offered a Cabinet berth to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar’s daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule, but she refused the offer.
Raksha Khadse, BJP MP said, “As a woman, Supriya Sule has performed good work and I have seen her performance. She had observed the functioning of her father Sharad Pawar since childhood hence she is aware about politics. Supriya has developed into an efficient leader and I am sure she will perform good work. Senior leaders might not be convinced with this decision but Supriya will take a good decision. I don’t think NCP is following dynasty politics as Pawar will definitely groom Supriya as his successor. End of the day work matters and politicians have to deliver. Even I am the daughter-in-law of Eknath Khadse.”
Dhananjay Mahadik, NCP MP said, “Sharad Pawar has taken the right decision and we will follow him. We can’t go against him. Supriya is an able leader and can amicably take the party forward.”
Tariq Anwar, NCP founder member said, “We have not received any information about Supriya being appointed as Pawar’s successor. If we receive any information then will make an announcement about it.”
Rajni Patil, Congress Rajya Sabha MP said, “If Supriya Sule becomes party president then it is justified as her father possess vital experience of running NCP. Dynasty politics is prevalent not only in India but overseas too.”
