Workers-union-protestSR Kulkarni, President of Transport and Dock Workers’ Union strongly criticized the government’s decision of diverting 8 million tonnes of General Cargo to other ports under the pretext of traffic congestion. He contended that it will adversely affect the livelihood of Twelve thousand port employees and about forty thousand pensioners, robbing the employment of more than lakh workers.

Kulkarni cautioned the government that in case, they arbitrarily decide to divert cargo, it will lead to closing down of the premier port and hence, the union will be forced to retaliate.

“The Transport and Dock Workers’ Union has requested Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport, Highway and Shipping to rethink the decision, failing which, the workers union with the assistance of the Federation and HMS will organize spontaneous agitation including indefinite strike” Kulkarni said.
