Three girl students chased a rickshaw puller and made him run for his life after he dropped them mid-way from their destination and hurled abuses at them when the girls paid him half the fare, in Sector 17 on Saturday.
Kushboo, Vandana and Meenakshi, pursuing degrees in human development and family relations from Government Home Science College for Women, Sector 10, ran after the man for almost 10 minutes from Sector 17 light point near the bus stand till the slip road of Sector 8, leaving passersby agape.
The rickshaw puller strained every sinew to pedal faster but when the girls were about to catch up, he broke into a sprint, leaving behind his means of livelihood. All this happened around 1.30 pm.
Kushboo said, “We hired the rickshaw from near our college. He promised to drop us at Sector 22 market but left us at Sector 17 light point. When we handed him half of the total fare, he started abusing us.” Meenakshi said, “We ignored him but he turned more aggressive. We raised the alarm and ran after him till he entered the slip road of Sector 8.”
The girls accused members of a police control room (PCR) Gypsy of not assisting them. The Gypsy was stationed at Sector 17 light point. Though local police noted down the complaint of girls, the victims claimed they were not hopeful of any kind of strict action as policemen advised them not to lodge any complaint.
Eyewitnesses claimed police reacted only when the girls made a call at the police control room. Sub-inspector (SI) Surinder Sharma of Sector 3 police station said a probe was launched and the offender would be caught shortly. A report was lodged at Sector 3 police station.
