Five traders from Ulhasnagar township of Thane district were arrested for alleged copyright violation and cheating customers by selling fake products after labelling them under popular brand names, police said.
Based on a complaint filed by an official of Titan Company, an offence was registered against the five businessmen for allegedly selling bags which had the brand name and its logo inscribed on the products, Assistant Police Inspector M M Jadhav said.
They had duped several customers by misusing popular brand names, he said.
Bags worth Rs 18.92 lakh having brand names inscribed illegally were recovered from them, he said.
Subsequently, traders Anil Punjabi, Satish Shah, Mahesh Gokhalani, Amit Shah and Sunil Chawla, having shops at various locations in Ulhasnagar, were arrested late last night, he said.
They have been booked under sections 420 (cheating) read 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC and also sections 51, 52 and 63 of the Indian Copyright Act.
Further probe is on in the matter, he added.
