Pregnancy transforms a woman into a mother and takes her into a new world filled with hopes, desires and dreams. We can only imagine the joy a woman feels when she hears the news of her pregnancy. But, this joy is surrounded by a lining of fear. The fear of losing a precious gift in an instant and suffering a dreaded miscarriage. The mention of a miscarriage gives rise to some myths. Here, we debunk some popular myths that surround miscarriages.

Most women, who have suffered miscarriages, usually play the blame game and make various situations the cause. The truth is that most miscarriages occur due to genetic or chromosomal disorders and there is not much that can be done to prevent them.

The real scenario is that most (70%) miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities and have nothing to do with external factors. Most of the time, routine investigations do not reveal any abnormality and that is what puts the pregnant couple in a fix as to why the miscarriage happened

The normal growth and development of the embryo or fetus gets affected due to the chromosomal abnormalities leading to a miscarriage.

Some common myths are:

Diet and Exercise:  Many people think stress, and exercise or food items eaten during pregnancy are responsible for miscarriages. This is not true.

Diet and exercise help in the baby’s growth but do not have much to do with a miscarriage.

Most women put unnecessary emphasis on diet and rest in the first trimester so when miscarriages occur they blame it on a particular food item eaten or an exercise activity. Many give up their jobs fearing a miscarriage.

This said, there are certain things that have to be kept in mind, like not eating raw papaya and pineapple and staying away from any strenuous activity. Normal exercise is good but do not over exert.

The one thing that pregnant women should not eat is raw papaya and pineapple, since they have properties that harms the baby. Strenuous physical activity like weight lifting and horse riding should be avoided too. Except for this nothing else is harmful. Normal activity does no harm, nor does eating continental, Chinese, Italian or any other cuisine.

Sex: Having sex during your pregnancy is completely safe and you need not worry unless you have been advised otherwise by your consulting doctor. In fact you can continue to be physically intimate with your partner until the time of delivery, if you are comfortable with it.
“Most miscarriages are not preventable. The causes are mostly internal like a genetic defect or hormonal problem. Things like maternal stress, moderate exercise or sex will not lead to abortion.

Stress: Stress is not a very valid or proven reason of miscarriage. Being stressful in your pregnancy is on the whole considered harsh for the baby’s development, but there is no strong research to link it to miscarriages.

History of Abortion or Miscarriage: Most people think if you have aborted before you are likely to face a miscarriage. This is a myth.
Your chances of miscarriage do not increase after an abortion or previous miscarriage. In all possibility, you are likely to carry the next pregnancy successfully. The chances do increase slightly after two or three repeated miscarriages. Although one may not worry about that since there are tests to find out the cause and many treatment options are available too.

Spotting: Most pregnant women think spotting in early pregnancy is a sign of an impending miscarriage.  This is a wrong fear. Slight bleeding in early pregnancy occurs in about 40 percent of pregnancies. It does not necessarily mean that you will suffer a miscarriage. Some amount of abdominal pain, like you experience during your periods is also normal.

Immediate Attention required:  most people think if you have suffered a miscarriage, immediate cleaning is required otherwise it can lead to an infection or sepsis. This she clarifies is false. She further shares, Quacks take advantage of this myth and force the patient to get admitted immediately and get a surgery done which might harm the mother rather than help retain the pregnancy which is already lost.
Although medical attention is required, there is no immediate risk of infection or harm to the mother if a dead pregnancy is retained in the body for some time, unless she is bleeding heavily.

One should not immediately rush for surgical cleaning of the pregnancy. It should be done by a qualified registered doctor at a hospital equipped for the same. Sometimes surgical cleaning may not be required and the process can be completed through medicines too.

Computers/ Radiations: Some people believe that the radiation from computers negatively affects a pregnancy and may also lead to a miscarriage. This is false and there is no research to prove it. The radiation from computers is low enough to not cause any harm to your foetus but if this worries you then limit the time you spend working on the device.
