Asserting that those elected by the people should not behave like kings, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Wednesday criticized Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over reports that an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York was delayed by nearly an hour on account of a member of his entourage and said that he should tender an apology for it.

“The people, who come into power, simply forget that they are elected by the people and are accountable to them. They become kings, they behave like kings….This nation has changed substantially in the last few years. It is much more watchful,” said RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha.

“I think the least that Devendra Fadnavis could do that he should tender a public apology and that too very quickly. I think the civil aviation minister should put forward his opinion on this incident. There should be no two norms-one for the VIPs and other for the ordinary public,” he added.

According to reports, an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York, with Fadnavis on board, was delayed by nearly an hour on Monday morning.

Reports said that the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s aide arrived at the airport with an outdated passport following which the passengers were made to wait for over 50 minutes while the new passport was delivered to him.

The flight was carrying around 250 passengers.
