The Centre, the Maharashtra government and National Textiles Corporation (NTC) last month signed a pact for transfer of 12 acres of Indu Mill land for building a memorial for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in Mumbai, Parliament was informed.

“A tripartite MoU between government of India, Maharashtra government and National Textiles Corporation has been signed on April 5 for transfer of 12 acres of Indu mill land, vested in NTC, for construction of a memorial for Bharat Ratna Dr. B R Ambedkar by Maharashtra government as required under…the Sick Textile Undertaking (nationalisation) Act (STUNA) 1974 on payment of compensation by the state government,” Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The land earmarked for the memorial sits next to Chaityabhoomi, where the last rites of Dr Ambedkar were performed.

The minister said that the sub-committee constituted as per the MoU shall determine the exact amount of compensation either in terms of money or allocation of any alternate land or allocation of any other tangible or intangible asset equivalent to monetary value of the land on the date of transfer, which should meet the requirement of due compensation as mandated under section 11 A of the STUNA.
