Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Amit Shah may be named the next party president by the end of this week, reports said on Thursday.
Shah will succeed Rajnath Singh, now the Home Minister in the Narendra Modi government.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh senior leadership met in Chittor, Rajasthan, on Wednesday to discuss the issue. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s decision will be considered final.
Besides Shah, Bharatiya Janata Party general secretaries Jagat Prakash Nadda (Himachal Pradesh) and P Muralidhar Rao (Andhra Pradesh), and party leader Om Mathur (Rajasthan) were considered for the post.
Shah, 50, an accused in the Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case, is a close aide of Modi.
A section of BJP leaders acknowledge his contribution in ensuring a huge number of Lok Sabha seats for the party in the 2014 General Elections.

Shah, a former Gujarat minister of state for home, has not only successfully enlivened a moribund organisation but also shored up enough numbers from the state to ensure that Modi moves from being the Gujarat CM to the next occupant of 7, Race Course Road, the prime minister’s official residence in New Delhi. Many attribute his ability to deliver to his innings as an organisation man in Gujarat, where he successfully spearheaded campaigns for the state BJP for three successive elections.
