Assault of Naga youth a racist attack, says Gurgaon police; main accused nabbed

Gurgaon Police on Friday claimed to have arrested three of the five perpetrators of the racial attack on three youths from Nagaland.

Talking to scribes, Nazneen Bhasin, DCP Gurgaon East, claimed that the main accused in the case was caught in a very short span of time. She also confirmed racial bias in the attack and added, “The accused were inebriated and violent. Ethnic racial element was present in the attack.”

The three Naga youth were thrashed in Gurgaon’s Sikanderpur village by a group of locals after they allegedly refused to share drinks with the attackers on Wednesday night.

While two Naga youths sustained severe injuries on different parts of their bodies, the other suffered minor injuries. One of them identified as James, a call-centre employee, had his hair cut by the attackers, police said.

Gurgaon Police had earlier informed that one James, his call-centre colleague (whose name was not disclosed), and Aayug, an unemployed youth were living in a rented room at Sikanderpur.

The trio refused to have drinks with a group of men from Sikanderpur and got into a heated argument. They were then beaten up and tha ttackers cropped James’ hairs as well.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh had expressed concern over growing incidents of assault on northeastern people and asked the Haryana government to nab the guilty and file a report detailing the incident as early as possible.
