The Supreme Court’s decision to impose a ban on sale of firecrackers in NCR-Delhi has not gone down well with yoga guru Baba Ramdev. According to him Hindus are targeted through this move and why Hindu festivals are singled out. Tweets and Facebook posts alleging ‘Islamic rule’ and ‘targeting’ of Hindu festivals have began trending after the court’s ban. Thus a question which arises here is why people are associating the ban on crackers with religion. Pollution doesn’t increase only by bursting crackers as large number of vehicles plying on road too are responsible for it. Will the government take any step to curtail rising vehicular population? Why impose a ban on crackers during Diwali when it is permitted during New Year, marriage, election victories and cricket matches? There are many people who earn their livelihood by manufacturing crackers. The court should have given them enough time prior to announcing the ban. Thus manufacturers and sellers of crackers are staring at a dark Diwali this year. On the other hand, environmental activists have welcomed the apex court order and said that it will go a long way to reduce pollution in Delhi.
