Modi is aware that traders in the state are unhappy with the government’s decision to hastily implement Goods and Services Tax (GST) and demonetisation campaign which has had severe impact on the economy. Therefore, he is giving some solace to traders by announcing that the government will try to address their concerns about GST and steps would be taken to make it tax payer friendly. Traders form a major chunk of BJP’s vote bank in Gujarat. He also added that GST Act was passed by arriving at a consensus with opposition parties like Congress. Earlier the Congress had attacked BJP for deliberately delaying the polling dates for Gujarat which would enable Modi to organise more rallies and announce polls sops to attract voters.
