BJP on Wednesday said it has set itself a target of enrolling more than 1.5 crore members by March 31, 2015 under its plan to expand the party’s footprint in Maharashtra which it wrested from Congress in recently-held Assembly elections.

“The target of 1.5 crore is 10 per cent of the total population of the state,” BJP spokesman Madhav Bhandari said, adding that earlier the party’s membership enrollment stood at around seven to eight lakh.

BJP had polled 1.97 crore votes in 260 constituencies it contested in Assembly polls held in October, he said.

To a query, Bhandari said the decision on new state unit president will be taken by the party leadership in Delhi and the appointment is likely to be announced after the membership drive is rolled up.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis currently heads the state BJP unit.

BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 122 seats in recent polls.
