Cases of crime against children has increased: Maneka Gandhi

The number of cases of crime against children including sexual violence and abuse has increased over the years as per the data maintained by National Crime Records Bureau, the government said on Friday.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi said the data on number of cases of child abuse in India is maintained by NCRB in its publication ‘Crime in India’.

“The latest report is available for the year 2013. According to the report, a total of 33,098, 38,172 and 58,224 cases of crime against children were reported in the country during 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively,” Gandhi said.

She said as per the data maintained by the NCRB, “the number of cases of crime against children which includes violence, sexual violence and abuse has increased over the years.”

Responding to another question, Gandhi said National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has reported that it has registered 31 complaints of misbehaviour or abuse and exploitation of children in protection homes or child care institutions during the last three years and the current year.
