The newly elected CM will have to take fast-track decisions to promote development.
Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday allocated portfolios to his ten-member council of ministers while keeping the Home, urban development, housing and health departments with himself. There are many challenges ahead of Fadnavis who has kept key portfolios for himself.
Home – Prosecute corrupt leaders
Mr Fadnavis has plans to probe some of the multi-crore scams that had plagued the previous Democratic Front government – a coalition of the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress. Claiming that he will investigate the matter out of political vendetta and it will be free and fair. “We will work for the betterment of the state. Probing the irrigation and Adarsh scams will be our priority.”
Incidentally, in September, the state home department had given Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau or ACB the permission to initiate an ‘open inquiry’ against then-Deputy Chief minister Ajit Pawar and former minister Sunil Tatkare, both senior leaders of the NCP, in connection with an alleged multi-crore irrigation scam.
In the Adarsh Housing Society case, the apartments intended for war veterans and widows in a highrise building in Mumbai’s posh Colaba were allegedly grabbed by politicians, defence officers and bureaucrats. I’m a very soft person but to run a government smoothly, I will be strong and ruthless.
Fadnavis after assuming the charge announced that he will pay attention to bring in proper coordination of multiple agencies so that infrastructure projects are completed in a time bound manner.
Some of the key challenges in Infrastructure projects to Fadnavis led government is to expedite the Rs 11,000 crore Mumbai Trans Harbor Link to facilitate de-congestion in Mumbai by improving connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The project failed to take off due to lack of environmental clearances for the depot land on either end, which fall in land under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) restrictions. Fadnavis will have to make a fresh attempt to seek necessary approvals from the Modi led government so that project work begins at the earliest.
Identify the areas where traffic congestion occurs and build flyovers to for smooth flow of traffic. Traffic jams are witnessed in both Eastern and Western Express Highway. Development of Navi Mumbai is one of the priority. If the transharbour sea-link is constructed then it will pave way for the development of Navi Mumbai. Construction of Haji Ali –Nariman Point Sealink is vital to can to de-congest the city’s southern end. It is necessary to promote the East–West connectivity which will reduce the load on suburban trains.
Efforts must be taken to make the city slum free. Even though low cost flats are provided to the lower middle class people but slums continue to mushroom in other areas of the city. Very few people have benefitted from the MMRDA’s low cost housing scheme. Fadnavis will have to revive these two schemes to provide affordable housing to the needy.
At present the common man is unable to avail health care facilities as it has become very expensive. Few doctors are available to treat the large number of population of Mumbai. Therefore Fadnavis will have to unveil a new policy to provide affordable health care facilities for the lower middle class people. Rising cost of medicines is also another issue which needs to be addressed at the earliest.
