A computer operator whose suspicious online activities led police to believe he was conspiring to blow up American establishments in the city has been arrested.

Anees Ansari, a resident of suburban Kurla, was nabbed by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).

He was booked on charges of criminal conspiracy and under relevant section of the Information Technology Act, and produced before a court which remanded him in ATS custody till October 26, an official said.

“Our police team that keeps a close watch on online posts got wind of his shady activities which suggested that he had been chatting with a person and their discussion revolved around blowing up American establishments here, including a school in suburban Bandra,” the officer.

Ansari created a Facebook account under a fictitious name and had been in touch with the person for quite some time, he said. “The nature of chats indicated he showed interest in targeting USA establishments.”

However, the ATS officer did not disclose the name of Ansari’s online friend.
