Launching a scathing attack on the Centre over demonetisation, Congress leader on Wednesday said that the government should introspect on how this drastic decision is hampering the economy. However, to snub opposition Prime Minister Narendra Modi said people of this country are with his decision of demonetisation.
Anand Sharma, former Union Minister’s statement came a few hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Parliamentary Party passed a resolution praising citizens for their support of the government’s demonetisation move. The resolution was moved by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and seconded by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
“It is our right to oppose and government should introspect itself for affecting the economy of the country for no reason,” Sharma said.
Demanding an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sharma further said that the former had not given a clarification over his demonetisation decision in Parliament, which in itself is condemnable.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the Opposition on Wednesday for triggering repeated disruptions over the government’s demonetisation exercise in Parliament that has stalled proceedings this winter session.
Modi said: “What some opposition parties are doing is undemocratic and the issue should be debated in Parliament.”
Parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar, who briefed reporters about the BJP meeting, quoted the PM as saying, “Janshakti [people’s support] is with the government on demonetisation. What some opposition parties are doing is undemocratic and the issue should be debated in Parliament.”
The opposition has been quite vocal in their opinion against the demonetisation drive citing reasons such as the severe inconvenience faced by the common man. The government has meanwhile attacked the opposition saying that they remained divided with different goals.
Opposition leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi had even accused the Prime Minister of informing his close associates about the drive before it had officially been announced so that they could find a way out of the problem.
