A local court has acquitted two coconut vendors in a 2008 murder case, giving them benefit of doubt.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge S J Kale on Monday acquitted Mainuddin Sikandar Sheikh (25) and Badshah Rustum Sheikh (32), hailing from Kisanganj district in Bihar, of the charge of killing another coconut vendor Mehboob Mohamad Idris Haque (28).

Haque used to do business in the same locality in Nerul in Navi Mumbai, where the Sheikhs had set shop.

On January 26, 2008 the Sheikhs allegedly killed Haque and dumped his body beside a lake in Nerul. The prosecution told the court that the duo had murdered Haque following a dispute on monetary issues.

After hearing the prosecution as well as the defence, the court concluded that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) against the duo and acquitted them.
