Doctor-AttackThe medical fraternity has strongly condemned the attack on two doctors in Panvel by relatives of a patient. On Sunday 15 to 20 persons had entered into the Life Line hospital and assaulted duty doctors Sandeep Amale and Kiran Naik.

According to Dr Sandeep Amale, a physician from Life Line Hospital, Panvel, “On Saturday night the patient Namubai Thakkur (75) had expired after undergoing treatment for two weeks. I didn’t even treat the patient. Doctors had taken prior consent of the patient before offering her treatment.”

“The patient’s family was offered counselling daily about bad prognosis. Her written consent was taken multiple times. The patient was provided option of shifting to higher centre. The police officials are turning a blind eye towards this issue. They must come forward to provide security to doctors” he added.

Dr Sandeep Amale was admitted in the ICU with multiple injuries on his nose, upper lips and fingers, Dr Kiran Naik, who sustained minor injuries, was administered first aid.

Private hospitals and OPD clinics had remained closed yesterday to protest against the attack on doctors. Raigad Medical Association had called the bandh. Doctors however had attended to emergency cases.

A doctor spoke to AV on the condition of anonymity and said, “This is outrageous incident. The unwarranted act of assault on doctors should be strongly condemned.”

Yogesh, Dr Amale’s brother, said that the doctors who were attacked did not even treat Thakkur. “My brother is innocent. He never treated the patient,” he added.
