Dress decently, don’t go out at night, avoid crowed buses: West Bengal Police advisory to women

A West Bengal Police advisory to women to dress decently, avoid going out at night and behave well among other things has led to outrage.

As per reports, Kankar Prasad Barui, the Deputy Commissioner of the Bidhannagar Police issued the advisory to deal with sexual harassment in public on his social networking page.

Some of his other advisory are as follows – to avoid travelling in crowded bus or train, avoid going to isolated places, to be street smart and walk in well-lit and frequented areas.

At the same time he wants women to have emergency speed dial numbers in their phone, be aware of people around them, carry pepper spray, stay in groups and be street smart.

The do’s and don’ts were posted on the website under the title ‘Tips on how to prevent eve-teasing’.

Later, the page was pulled down.

Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has been criticised time and again for not giving adequate attention to safety of women.

There have been numerous cases of rape and murder in the state since Trinamool Congress came to power but Mamata has dismissed the allegations as political conspiracy by her opponents.

The latest being the suspected rape and murder of a girl in at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district last week. Her body was found near the railway tracks.

Five people have been arrested in connection with the case so far.
