A drug peddler was arrested from Jogeshwari for alleged possession of two kg of methamphetamine drug valued at Rs. 25 lakh in the international market, police said.

“Based on a tip-off that peddler Jhakir Sayyad (32) was scheduled to arrive near Lotus Park building in Jogeshwari, police laid a trap and nabbed him,” said Subhash Wele, senior inspector at Oshiwara police station.

Methamphetamine, weighing two kg was seized from his possession, the officer said, adding that the contraband was estimated to be valued at Rs. 25 lakh.

“We are investigating for whom the consignment was supposed to be delivered,” Wele added.

Earlier, Sayyad had been arrested with charas by the Narcotics branch of the Mumbai Police and convicted for six years in that case. A few months ago, he walked out of the jail after completing his sentence.

Methamphetamine is usually peddled at rave parties with street names like MD, Meow Meow and Crystal, police said.

Rampant increase in the peddling and consumption of methamphetamine has led the Mumbai Police to conduct several raids across the city since the past few months.

Youngsters from affluent to lower class families are addicted to the drug as the market for the contraband has moved from the elite circles to local areas, police said.
