A 7-year-old girl was kidnapped from suburban Ghatkopar, following which one person was arrested, police said.

The girl was kidnapped on May 28 following which a case was registered under Section 363 (kidnapping) of IPC by Pant Nagar Police Station against unidentified persons, said Deputy Police Commissioner Vinay Rathod.

The accused Rambilal Prajapati (24) was caught on CCTV and was traced at Thane railway station by a traffic constable after which he was handed over to Mumbai police, he said.

“We had very clear footage of CCTV that helped us in detecting the case. First we got to know that kidnapper was a carpenter and we enquired other carpenters to ascertain his possible hideouts,” Rathod said.

“We had also circulated the video of CCTV footage on social media, especially on Whatsapp (a mobile application) that really helped us. A vigilant traffic constable Juber Tamboli spotted the accused with the girl and nabbed him from near Thane station,” the officer said.

“The accused changed his dress while girl was in the same dress, that helped Tamboli to confirm the kidnapper and girl,” Rathod said.

The girl has been reunited with her family and has been sent to Rajawadi hospital for medical check-up, police said, adding investigations are underway.
