Mumbai Police has arrested an old woman from Badlapur area in Thane district on charges of killing her two-and-a-half-year old granddaughter.
The accused has been identified as 44-year-old Mangal Pradip Borse, police said.
According to police, Borse registered a case of kidnapping of her granddaughter. Later, five teams were constituted to locate the missing child.
With the help of CCTV footages, the police, almost after nine hours of search operations, successfully managed to recover the dead body of the victim from a sewer.
The victim has been identified as Ketki Kapil Hirey.
After interrogating the old lady, the Police disclosed the entire story.
The kid was mentally retarded and used to live with her grandmother as both of her parents were working.
The old lady was feeling annoyed with the kid because she could neither speak nor comprehend things as she was mentally retarded.
Desperate to get rid of the kid, the grandmother threw her in a nearby sewer.
Police claimed that Borse tried to mislead the police by claiming that Ketki was snatched by an unknown woman while she was riding a rickshaw along with the kid.
According to Police, the grandmother Borse has confessed her crime. A case under the IPC 302 has been registered against her.
