Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday hit out at the Narendra Modi-led NDA government and asked what will be it’s next move after banning the IIT students from reportedly critisising the Prime Minister.

Rahul took to Twitter to convey his disagreement with the HRD Ministry’s move and wrote in a message: “IIT student group banned for criticizing Modi Government. What next?”

He further wrote: “Free speech is our right. We will fight any attempt to crush dissent and debate.”

Earlier in the day, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest outside Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani’s residence over the de-recognition of a students study group in the IIT Madras.

The agitators raised slogans against the Union Minister and the Central government before being detained by the security forces.

IIT Madras had earlier de-recognised Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle over an anonymous complaint to the central government that it was trying to spread hatred towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies by distributing provocative pamphlets and posters in the campus, igniting a massive controversy.

The acting director of the institute, Professor K Ramamurthy, said the group had not been working according to the guidelines issued by the represented body.

Ramamurthy also added that the Dean of the institute has asked the students` group to present their stand.
