An Indian-origin author in South Africa has paid the price for praising controversial writer Salman Rushdie.

According to reports, writer Zainub Priya Dala was brutally assaulted and verbally abused after she praised Rushdie, whose work has often been under the scanner.

Reports suggest that the woman was hit in the face with a brick last week at a school in Durban city. The incident happened when Dala had to launch her novel ‘What About Meera’ in the city on Saturday.

However, upon knowing about the incident, Rushdie took to Twitter to show his concern and extended his support to Zainub Priya Dala. Reacting to the attack, Rushdie said the attack on Dala was “appalling and disgraceful”.
