The Islamic State is believed to have begun making and using chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria.

As per a report in the BBC, the US government is convinced of the use of chemical weapons by the Islamic State. The report says that US has identified atleast four occasions on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border where IS has used mustard agents.

The chemical was being used in powder form, the report added.

While the earlier assumption was that IS may have acquired the weapons from Iraq or Syria.

However a closer analysis of the matter suggests that the chances of the terror group having acquired ready-made chemical weapons was remote as the US forces have operated in Iraq till recently and any such weapon could not have had gone unnoticed.

As regards to Syria, the Bashar al-Assad government was forced to hand over all its chemical arsenal after it was threatened by US of air strikes.

The US believes that Islamic State must have produced the chemical weapons on its own using the locally available know-how in the region.
