It’s still a wide open tournament, says Angelo Mathews

Delhi daredevils are enduring an inconsistent campaign but their key all rounder Angelo Mathews is confident that the side can turn it around and make the play-offs of the IPL cricket tournament.

“We played pretty well against Mumbai (Indians at Delhi on April 23). We have another chance to play in Mumbai (at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday after the loss to Royals at the Brabourne Stadium) and against Mumbai. We need to win and keep in contention. It’s still a wide open tournament,” said the Sri Lanka captain ahead of the MI clash.

“Anyone can have a bad day. Mumbai can have a bad day. We need to focus on our performance,” said Mathews about Delhi’s prospects while mentioning the need to bounce back after a poor show on the field when they dropped a few catches to let off Royals’ top order batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Karun Nair who hit individual fifties and also forged a match-winning century stand.

“I thought fielding cost us the game. I thought it was the worst fielding performance that we saw in the tournament from Delhi. I thought we bowled and batted pretty well. We need to bounce back quickly,” he said.

Asked about taking on MI so soon after the loss to RR, Mathews felt it could be turned to his team’s advantage. “It’s an advantage as well. We have done all our hard work. It’s just the mental thing, if we can get it right for the next game. We need to regroup, talk about the mistakes and we can come back,” said the Lanka pace bowling all rounder.

“I am looking to contribute with bat, ball or in the field,” said Mathews after making 16 in the unsuccessful run-chase after taking 1 for 27 against Royals.
