Days after being acquitted by the Karnataka High Court in a disproportionate assets case, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa will take oath as Tamil Nadu chief minister on May 23.

Current Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam will tender his resignation on May 22, said AIADMK spokesperson CR Saraswathi on Wednesday.

Jayalalithaa is scheduled to offer floral tributes to the party’s founder MG Ramachandran’s (MGR) statue, and DMK founder CN Annadurai’s and DK founder EV Ramaswamy’s statues on May 22. Also on the same day, the AIADMK has called a meeting of its legislators at the party headquarters here to elect Jayalalithaa as leader of the AIADMK legislature party.

Jayalalithaa lost her chief minister’s post and assembly (Srirangam constituency) seat after she was convicted by a trial court in Bengaluru for holding assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.

The Karnataka High Court upheld her appeal against the conviction and acquitted her.
