He might not be a part of the current England squad, but that didn’t keep Kevin Pietersen away from following the action of the first Test match played between the Poms and New Zealand at Lord’s.

KP, who wasn’t recalled to the squad due to a “massive trust issue” cited by Andrew Strauss, hailed the performance of Ben Stokes, who was the hero in England’s convincing win against the Kiwis.

The mercurial batsman took to Twitter to praise Stokes’ maiden Test century after he missed out on achieving the feat in the first innings by eight runs.

Apart from playing two brilliant knocks, Stokes was also handy with the ball as he scalped three wickets in the second innings, including that of Brendon McCullum whom he dismissed for a first-ball duck.

In a Test that witnessed several ups and downs, the Alastair Cook-led team defeated New Zealand by 121 runs.

The Test victory will give a lot of confidence to Cook, who played a captain’s knock in the second innings – 162 off 345 balls – an innings many believe was one of the finest in recent times.

England now have a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
