Kin of brain dead techie donate his organs in Tamil Nadu

Setting aside their grief, the family members of a 30-year-old software engineer, who was declared brain dead following a road accident, donated his organs on Friday, hospital authorities said.

Malaiyan Pakshirajan alias Balaji was admitted to Global Hospital here following an accident on September 8.

“The victim had sustained severe head injuries and there was internal bleeding and despite best efforts and a surgery, he slipped into the stage of brain death,” Dr. Joy Varghese of Global Hospital told a news agency.

His harvested organs, a kidney each was provided to CMC Vellore and Global Hospital.

While the heart was given to Fortis Malar, the eyes were sent to SRM Hospital and liver to Apollo Hospital, he added.

An IT analyst with Tata Consultancy Services, Pakshirajan, the only son of his parents, was returning home from his office on a two-wheeler when he met with the accident on the Thuraipakkam-Pallavaram Radial Road.

An alert ambulance crew shifted him to a hospital in Chromepet after finding him lying unconscious on the road.

From there, he was shifted to Global Hospital soon after he was found to have suffered severe head injury despite wearing a helmet.

Though doctors performed a brain surgery immediately after his admission, he did not respond to treatment and was declared brain dead on the night of September 11.

After doctors explained the situation to his parents and wife, who is eight months pregnant, they agreed to donate his organs, following which they were harvested and transplanted to needy patients after fulfilling government norms.

“It was a tough call to take. But we all thought though he has left us, he would give life to so many others,” said his 74-year old father Malaiyan, a native of Srivilliputhur.

His mother Andal was the first one to moot the idea, said a family member. Though it was an irreparable loss to her, being the only son after five daughters, she chose to help others.

“My son was very attached to the family, especially his sisters. He always wanted to be amid family members. In fact, he cut short his US assignment and returned to India only to take care of us after his marriage last year. But today it is a great shock for all of us. We all decided to donate the organs as he will continue to live in the world,” she said.
