Argentine football icon Diego Maradona feels Lionel Messi should not have been given the Golden Ball award at this year’s World Cup in Brazil because he did not deserve it.
Argentina lost the FIFA World Cup 2014 final 1-0 in extra time to Germany and four-time World Player of the Year Messi missed a great chance to score in the second half.
Messi, who single-handedly took Argentina to the finals this year, beat competition from German striker Thomas Muller, Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez and Netherlands’ Arjen Robben to win the prestigious award. However, Maradona said that 27-year-old Messi had been chosen because of commercial reasons.
“Messi? I would give him heaven if possible,” Maradona said in a TV show.
Maradona also expressed his sadness over Argentina losing out in a tightly contested final.
“I feel sorry for my country. Mario Gotze’s goal really hurt. There’s a huge sadness in my heart that we lost the final,” he said.
“All things put together, I think Argentina deserved at least penalties. That Germany won was the result of a misunderstanding in the Argentine defence,” he added.
