A middle-aged man and a teenager, who had earlier eloped, were mercilessly beaten and burnt to death allegedly on the orders of a village panchayat in the Gaya district of Bihar.

Reports on Wednesday said that the 16-year-old girl and her alleged lover, a 36-year-old man, were allegedly killed after a public hearing attended by hundreds of people.

Ironically, the girl’s family also attended the public hearing and is believed to have supported the village panchayat’s order.

An FIR has also been filed against 15 people, including the girl’s father.

The Gaya Police has begun investigation into the matter and has arrested one person in this case.

A senior police officer was quoted as saying that some members of the girl’s family might be involved in killing the couple, while several others stood there as mute spectators as they did not report the matter to police.

The police has, however, assured that action will be taken against all those guilty in the case.

According to reports, the man was allegedly married, with three children, and used to come to the village frequently to visit his in-laws. That is how he had reportedly met the teenager.

The two allegedly ran away three days ago, but were hunted down by the girl’s family and brought back to the village today morning. Thereafter a hearing of village panchayat was called to decide on their punishment.
