The Prithviraj Chavan government of Maharashtra on Wednesday ordered a probe into massive power outages faced by several areas in south and central Mumbai yesterday.
According to reports, the probe order comes a day after large parts of ‘maximum city’ Mumbai faced massive power cuts believed to have been caused by a technical fault at a power generation unit that supplies electricity to the city.
With a shortfall of over 1200 MW of the total demand of around 3200 MW, many parts of the city witnessed unending power cuts since Tuesday morning.
Areas like Juhu, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Santacruz East, Bandra, Kurla, Tilaknagar, Vikhroli and Sakinaka were most hit.
The fault occurred at a 500 MW unit of Tata Power. With the two other units of the company that generate 750 MW shut following a scheduled shutdown, the situation became unmanageable for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking (BEST), which buys electricity from Tata Power.
Interestingly, power ministers of five states today urged Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal to help restore power supply to their states facing major blackouts caused by the closure of some generation units of Adani Power and Tata Power plants at Mundra over a tariff revision dispute.
In a marathon meeting here with Goyal Tuesday, energy ministers of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan suggested that the Centre intervene to resolve the power crises in their respective states owing to shutting down of units of two power plants, a ministry.
