In view of Congress’ continuous electoral drubbings in several states, the clamour for making Priyanka Gandhi Vadra the party president is growing stronger with every passing day.
Some posters have come up on the streets of Allahabad, demanding the Congress high command to appoint Priyanka as the party president at the earliest.
The posters, which have been put up to wish Priyanka a happy birthday, also read that she should now hold the reins of the Congress in a way to revive it.
“Maiya behna ko do janamdin ka uphaar, Adhyaksh bane Priyanka to aaye Congress mein nikhar (Mother present a gift of Congress’ presidentship to Priyanka on her birthday. Through her, Congress will revive),” say the posters.
The concluding line of the poster also reads that the party should not listen to its senior leader Digvijay Singh, but the workers. “Digvijay ki nahi, karykartaon ki suno pukar,” the posters read.
Digvijay Singh had repeatedly said that the party’s vice president Rahul Gandhi should assume full-time leadership of the All India Congress Committee. “Time has come for Rahul Gandhi to take the complete charge of Congress. All the party members will certainly support him,” said Singh.
Similar posters were put in Allahabad last year as well, demanding a bigger role for Priyanka in Congress. “Maiya do aadesh, Priyanka badaye Congress ka kad,” read one of the posters then.
After its humiliating defeat in 2014 General Elections, in which it could just win 44 seats, its lowest ever tally, the Congress lost in Maharashtra and Haryana and performed poorly in Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir Assembly polls held recently.
