A parcel bomb assembled by an engineering graduate to target his girlfriend exploded at his friend’s house in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, leaving him battling for his life in the hospital.

The incident was reported from Parasia town of the district on October 2.

Police said accused Ashish Agarwal has been charged with attempt to murder and sent to jail on Saturday.

“During interrogation, he admitted he assembled the bomb and picked up the technique from the internet. Wires and other equipment were recovered from a drawer in Agarwal’s bedroom,” said a policeman.

The bomb was wrapped as a toy gift and engineered to explode the moment it was plugged in, said the official.

“He wrote the name of Upendra Awasthi of Jabalpur on the envelope but could not dispatch it. He gave the parcel to one of his friends Upendra Bajpayee to send it and instructed him to not open the wrapping,“ the officer said.

Out of curiosity, Bajpayee plugged the toy and it exploded. He suffered burns and is battling for life in hospital.

Agarwal is married and an engineering graduate but he was having an affair with a girl in Jabalpur.

“We are waiting for Bajpayee to recover. Samples have been sent for forensic tests and we are also trying to locate Upendra Awasthi to whom the accused wanted to send the parcel,“ said the police officer. Investigations are on.
