A court in Ahmedabad, Friday, accepted a closure report filed the Gujarat Police relating to a selfie taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he cast his vote in the last Lok Sabha polls.

The city crime branch had given Modi a clean chit his act of taking a selfie with the BJP’s symbol and addressing mediapersons on the day of the elections on April 30 outside the polling booth. He was the chief minister of Gujarat then.

Following objections raised by the opposition parties, the Election Commission of India had ordered the Gujarat government to register an FIR under the Representation of the People Act against Modi and concerned newspersons and media houses for alleged violation of the code of conduct.

He was also booked for violation of the notification under section 188 of the IPC (campaigning is prohibited within 100 metres of the booth and within 48 hours of polling).

The poll panel had said it was “of the view that by holding that meeting… when the polling is going on in the entire state of Gujarat and in different parts of the country, Modi has violated the provisions of Sections 126 (1) (a) and 126 (l) (b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.”

In its closure reports, the police said that neither Modi nor any functionary of the BJP had invited the media for an interaction outside the polling booth, adding that the media cannot be restrained from approaching any location.
