The growing rate of students engaging themselves for higher education has generated problem for many colleges of Mumbai. In a recent survey, it was seen that colleges affiliated to Mumbai University are facing hefty number of students in a classroom. This has carried difficulty among the teachers regarding teaching.
This year in most of the top city colleges in Mumbai, the number of students for a class has touched 135 students or more in a classroom. The increased number of students has created problems for teachers and even for students. As per UGC norm, the ideal teacher-students ratio is 1:20 and every student in a classroom should be allotted 10 square feet of space. But with the recent decision of UGC to the colleges to increase seats by 15-20% have created such trouble.
The teachers are facing lot of difficulty with teaching. According to some of the professors, issues like problem of air ventilation in cramped classrooms, insufficiency of mikes and sound system in the classrooms are arriving in. many teachers are suffering from problems related to vocal chords as they have to speak in loud tone while taking classes. Not only have this, but about 70% of the 50 plus teachers complained of suffering from diabetes and along with it some other disorders.
Inspite of knowing every problem UGC cannot take any of the direct action against colleges as the exceeded teacher student ratio reflects on the performance of colleges. Alas, in the rating given by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), not putting up to the mark makes colleges low in points.
