Equity benchmarks started off the year 2016 on a positive note. The Sensex rose 43.36 points to 26160.90 and the Nifty gained 16.85 points at 7963.20 amid thin volumes as global markets shut on Friday.
The broader markets gained 0.9 per cent. The market breadth was also strong as about 1971 shares advanced against 856 declining shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Tata Motors and Adani Ports topped buying list on Sensex, up 2.7 per cent each followed by SBI, L&T, Coal India and BHEL with over a percent gain. TCS, HDFC, HUL, NTPC and GAIL were losers.
