Nirbhaya caseQuestioning the role of the Centre and Delhi government, the parents of December 16 gang-rape victim on Sunday asked why they did not take action earlier to stop the imminent release of the juvenile convict.

Opposing the release of the juvenile, the victim’s mother said, “Our fight is just on the issue that he (juvenile convict) must not come out. If he will come out then what is the point of hearing (by Supreme Court) or any other thing.”

“All knew that he will be released so steps should have been taken during these three years,” she said adding, “I want justice and stay on his release.”

Protesters who gathered at the heavily barricaded India Gate to oppose the release of the youngest of the six men convicted for the gang-rape and murder of Jyoti Singh have been detained by police. Among them are Jyoti’s parents, who were leading the protests and have accused the Centre and the Delhi government of failing them.

The police had declared Section 144 at India Gate — where thousands had braved water cannons three years ago – and moved the protesters to Jantar Mantar, the usual protest venue of the capital. But the protesters had moved back on Rajpath near India Gate, with plans to hold a candle-light vigil this evening.

Delhi Police on Sunday detained Nirbhaya’s parents and took them to Parliament street police station. Several NSUI and ABVP members protesting at Rajpath were also removed by the police.

But Nirbhaya’s family is adamant and asking why are people trying to save a criminal accused of a heinous crime.” I am not scared of going to the jail. Today everyone is trying to save the criminal. There is so much police force to save him. If this force is deployed for the safety of women no woman will get raped,” victim’s mother said.

Meanwhile, the juvenile convict in the December 16 gangrape was on Sunday released and sent to an NGO at an undisclosed destination with police no longer guarding him.

“We have left him with an NGO,” police sources said. Government sources said when asked two days back whether he would like to go home in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh or to an NGO, he opted for the latter citing security concerns.

The release became possible notwithstanding the Delhi Commission for Women’s late night effort to stall it failed after the Supreme Court post-midnight held a sitting and refused to stay it.
